What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease, which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and Nerves.

The rising prevalence of diabetes is driven by a combination of factors - rapid urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, tobacco use, and increasing life expectancy.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), India had 69.2 million people living with diabetes in 2015. Nearly 98 million people in India nay have type 2 Diabetes by 2030, according to a study published.

Statistics have revealed that 10 per cent of Indians are diabetic and 20 per cent pre diabetic. If the average lifespan of a person is 70, a diabetic will live up to 62 years. But if you manage your diabetes well you may live up to 78, due to increased health care as a whole.
